In the early 60's, a detachment called High Garrett Det 2 was part of the 2163rd Air Force Comm. Sq. attached to RAF Wethersfield in England. High Garrett was located 3 miles as the crow flys, 8 miles by road, from Wethersfield. The detachment was a micro-wave radio relay site, which was part of the communications service supplying telephone and teletye for the United States Air Force in Europe. The Marconi transmitters we worked on, were made in Chelmsford England . During the early 60's, The majority of the English bases had the Marconi micro-wave equipment.
High Garrett also had TRC-24 for communication between Wethersfield and the site.
When the 20th Tac Fighter Wing had alerts, High Garrett also became the Combat Operation Center.
During WWII, High Garrett was a prisoner of war camp, for Italians. They had about 200 prisoner, and They loved it there. They would get passes and go to the movies in Braintree any time they wanted. Not one of them tried to escape. A few of them remained in Braintree after the war.
